DIrector, Environmental Waste

The Director, Environmental Waste will support all our lines of businesses by managing their hazardous and non-hazardous waste programs & projects while complying with state & federal regulations. This EHS Leadership role requires an individual with exceptional communication skills, strong leadership capabilities, and a proven ability to execute strategic initiatives that drive continuous improvement in safety, compliance, and sustainability practices.

Compensation: 120,000 To 140,000 Per Year

Job Responsibilities:

Develop and implement environmental waste strategies and policies throughout the organization.

  • Oversee internal/external hazardous waste management and solid waste management practices for waste streams through proper handling, storage, tracking, and disposal of all waste.
  • Work within the framework of the EHS Management System and Regulatory Requirements.
  • Accurate identification and classification of hazardous and non-hazardous materials
  • Monitors federal, state and municipal regulatory changes to ensure future compliance. Provide environmental expertise to internal teams, and coordinate with stakeholders regarding relevant issues.
  • Preparation of waste for shipment and disposal, including creation of all documents and managing the lifecycle of the documentation and tracking.
  • Responsible for the safe handling of waste on our sites, including loading/unloading of waste; waste accruals, PO’s, invoices, waste pricing with TSDF vendors.
  • Ensure the required inspections and audits are completed timely and accurately.
  • Conduct waste inspections, safety equipment inspections, and other required facility permit inspections as needed.
  • Accurate identification and classification of regulated materials
  • Participate in internal and external environmental audits.
  • Partner with operations, safety, and engineering personnel to ensure work practices and/or equipment changes are integrated, efficient, and effective.
  • Provide analysis and interpretations of environmental findings and prepare technical procedures and reports as required.
  • Work with site employees on maintaining environmental compliance by providing training, auditing, compliance evaluations, and facility maintenance.
  • In partnership with EHS Training Department, develop training and educational tools regarding environmental goals, compliance, and awareness.
  • Coordination with disposal facilities, and transportation agencies as applicable
  • Preparation and submission of any other documents required by federal, state, and local laws and regulations or disposal facilities
  • Coordination of review and approval procedures for all manifests
  • Participate in incident investigation process and assist with corrective action plan development and implementation
  • Responsible to identify all required permits
  • Work and manage in a matrix organization with shared resources.
  • Responsible for complying with Federal, state, and local laws and regulations which are applicable

Other Environmental Projects:

  • Engagement with regulators
  • Assist with a variety of environmental functions, including companywide permitting, and Tier II chemical reporting, RCRA, wastewater, stormwater, air emissions, recycling, heel/product management, DOT.
  • Assist with environmental emergency response.
  • Conduct spill response management, including the assessment of the spills and cleanup efforts
  • Travel required/Direct engagement with facilities.
  • Travel to locations for Emergency response as needed.

Requirements

  • Proficient in technical writing to assist with Waste permit applications and Waste Management Plans
  • 7-10 years of experience in Waste
  • Plan and Permit writing required.
  • Specialized training in Hazardous Materials Transportation includes 49 CFR 172, Subpart H, and IATA DGR
  • Associated Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) registrations/credentials such as CHMM
  • 7-10 years of experience performing waste management activities associated with coordinating packaging, transport, and disposal
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, construction management, health physics, geology, chemistry, or a related field
